Thanks to one of my wife’s coworkers I’ve really been getting into board and card games over the last couple years.
I’m probably up to around 20-25 games at this point. The number is even higher if you include the regular suspects of Monopoly, Life, etc.
Random crappy pic of the top two shelves in the game closet
We have two independent game stores pretty close to me and both had sales on Black Friday. I ended out adding four more games to my list.
We played one today which I just realized was turned into a mobile game.
It’s a pretty entertaining card/strategy game. I bet it would be even better with the maximum of 6 players.
We haven’t gotten to check out the others I bought yet.
The Redshirts game is a spoof of Munchkins meets Star Trek with the goal being to be the first captain to have all his redshirts killed on missions. Along the way you sabotage the other players by helping save your opponents characters.
The others only time will tell exactly what they’re like, but they were 75% off so I figured I could take the risk. The biggest problem with these games is that they can get expensive so there’s some I know I like that I just haven’t bought because of the price.
Any other board game fans here? If so what are some of your favorites?

Gravwell is fun. There is also the ‘racing’ board game Rallyman. And there is an F1-centered game that can be fun as well.

I’ve played a game called Peloton that sounds like a simpler version of Rallyman.
Gravwell sounds like something I would enjoy.

Ticket to Ride!
I love games but only play when I’m home with my family.

Ticket to ride is somewhere in that mess of a closet.
We have a game night when my son is here and generally play two or three different games. We also go to a game day with my wife’s coworkers once a month. That’s how this all started. One of her coworkers has dozens of games because one of his family members gets them from board game trade shows. We go to their house and do a potluck and will play different games over 8 or so hours. Then we have a couple games that take 5-10 minutes to play that we take to play between rounds at a weekly bar trivia night we go to.

Acquire, Smash Up, and Tsuro are some of our go to games. All three different styles but very "tight" games. We probably own about 40(?) but those three are my favorites.

I’ve played a game called Lords of Vegas that sounds very similar to Acquire. You acquire vacant lots, build casinos, and try to steal casinos from your opponents.
I may have to check out Smash Up though.

My wife works with the guy who created Gravwell. Or knows him somehow.

I’ll have to check that one out! Acquire is a bit odd. While you are technically building and improving hotel chains, you have no actual ownership in them aside from the stock you buy (and the one you get for founding it). A really newb mistake is to get emotionally invested in “your” hotel, rather than diversifying your stock and playing the market. It is really fun and interesting.

Oh it is also the type of game where everyone thinks they’re winning/ losing until the very end when the money is totaled up. This is a good thing. I hate games where you lose in the first 25% and have to watch other people play or, even worse, continue to play even though there is 0% chance of you changing the outcome.

Ah ok, that’s certainly a twist. In Lords of Vegas there is a grid of lots with different values based on position. You start a turn by drawing a card that gives you a specific space, you can buy the space to build a hotel, and choose the color.
You can expand by either getting an adjacent space by drawing or buying it outright, but if you buy it someone can steal it if they get that space in the drawing. There are more spaces than turns so you may get lucky and keep it.
You steal by building a hotel by an opponent in the same color that has a higher assigned value. It can be stolen back by buying the option to roll dice.
Throughout the game you get money based on having casinos that match the color on cards that are drawn.

My ex got me into them, played them with her a lot. I’ve been rather averse to them since she left, as is the case with a lot of things.

Taluva. I believe it’s been reprinted. I acquired my copy several years ago after a year long weekly search session to find a new and never opened copy bel ow $150 US. You pick and place an island tile, then get to place a hut, temple, or tower. Eventually you stack tiles up based on volcanos. It’s seemingly pretty simple but can get pretty cutthroat. A game is about 30-40 minutes and super easy to teach. I’m not sure if it’s been fiddled with in the reprint. But it’s a solid game for “game people” and casual gamers.

Where to start, try:
Betrayal House on a Hill
Pandemic
Small world
Gloom
7 wonders
Bloodborne
Wizards card game
And here are the majority of my games. Sorry it’s a mess.
And the new Black Friday games to be played yet. The only one pictured that I don’t recommend is Xenoshyft. It’s just long and drawn out. Works better as a single player.

Of what I see in your stack I think Bang is one of my favorites. I don’t have my own copy, but I’ll buy one eventually.
One night revolution is pretty good too. I like it much better than resistance even though the premise is similar.
There’s a local store that’s still having a sale until Wednesday I may have to visit. I’ve heard good things about pandemic so if they have it I’ll probably grab a copy.

Yeah, I’m sure we’ve all had something ruined for us because of thoughts and memories they can drag up for us.

We played a lot of Acquire when I was a kid. Great game. I think I’ve got my parents’ copy, and my in-laws have it and we play it with them sometimes.
